The Summercrisp Pear is a great cold hardy pear that ripens early season. It is well known for its crisp and juicy texture. The fruit is green with a distinct red blush. Unlike most pears, it does not require off tree ripening to have a soft texture. Fruit is very sweet. This variety is also fire blight resistant.
- Taste & Texture: The fruit is sweet, juicy, and crisp, with an aromatic flavor. It should be consumed while still firm to avoid grittiness that can develop if allowed to yellow and over-ripen on the tree or at room temperature.
- Appearance: The pears are medium-sized, chartreuse green with a distinct red blush.
- Harvest & Storage: Harvest occurs in mid-August (late summer) when the fruit is still green with a red blush and very firm. When refrigerated immediately after picking, the fruit can be stored for up to two months.
- Tree & Growing Conditions: The tree is noted for being one of the most cold-hardy pear varieties (USDA Zones 4-8) and exhibits strong resistance to fire blight disease. It is a vigorous grower, typically reaching 10-15 feet in height when semi-dwarf.
- Pollination: The ‘Summercrisp’ pear is not self-fertile and requires a different pear variety nearby for cross-pollination to produce fruit. Suitable pollinators include ‘Parker’, ‘Patten’, ‘Anjou’, or ‘Bosc’ pears.
- Fresh Eating: This is where the ‘Summercrisp’ pear truly shines, as its unique crisp texture and sweetness are best appreciated when eaten fresh.
- Cooking/Baking: It can be used in cooking and baking, but is generally not recommended for canning, as the processing tends to highlight the grit cells.
- Home Orchards: Due to its cold hardiness, disease resistance, and reliable annual yield, it is an excellent choice for home gardeners and small-scale plantings in colder climates.
