Pecan Trees

Pecans are one of the most popular nut trees for home gardens and orchards. They are long-lived, beautiful shade trees that produce delicious, nutritious nuts for generations. Mature pecan trees typically grow 50 to 70 feet tall, so be sure to plant them where they have plenty of room to grow.

Pecan Tree Pollination

Pecan trees are a little different from most fruit trees. To produce the best crops of pecans, they need pollen from a different flowering type.

There are two pollination types: Type I and Type II.

For the best nut production, we recommend planting at least one Type I tree and one Type II tree. Having both types allows the trees to pollinate each other, resulting in heavier, more consistent crops.

  • Type I (Protandrous): These trees release their pollen first and receive pollen later in the season.
  • Type II (Protogynous): These trees are ready to receive pollen first and release their pollen later.

By planting one tree of each pollination type, you’ll enjoy the best chance for abundant pecan harvests year after year.
