Tayberry
The Tayberry is an exciting cross between a blackberry and a red raspberry, combining the best qualities of both fruits into one outstanding berry. This vigorous, thorny plant produces very large, aromatic berries with a beautiful deep purple color and an exceptionally sweet, rich flavor. Tayberries are delicious fresh from the vine and are also excellent for jams, jellies, syrups, pies, cobblers, and dessert toppings.
Originally developed near Scotland’s Tay River Valley, the Tayberry has become a favorite among home gardeners for its unique flavor and impressive fruit size. The berries ripen over an extended period, providing weeks of fresh harvests during the summer.
Tayberries perform best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. They thrive in well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 6.0–6.8. Space plants 3–4 feet apart to allow plenty of room for growth and good air circulation. As with blackberries, the canes benefit from a trellis or other support system for easier harvesting and maintenance.
With proper care, Tayberries are vigorous growers that reward gardeners with abundant harvests of flavorful fruit year after year.
