Celeste fig is widely known as a “sugar fig” because of the intense very sweet flesh that has a brown sugar and rich honey flavor. Produces medium sized figs even in unfavorable weather. Resistant to both pests and diseases and produces large crops of the sweetest and juiciest figs around. Flesh is dense and has a bright strawberry color. Skin is brownish color. Very widely planted variety. The most cold hardy variety available. It can handle temperatures down to 10 degrees. This one is an excellent variety for fig preserves and also for dried fruit. Celeste also has a “Closed Eye” which is the small opening at the bottom of the fruit. This prevents spoilage from rain and insects.
Trees grow compact and are very productive. These are the first figs to ripen with main crop usually in mid summer. The fruit will droop when fully ripe and may even split slightly, meaning it is ready to eat and enjoy!
