American Native Pawpaw Seedling
Discover the largest fruit native to North America! The Native American Pawpaw is a unique and fascinating fruit tree that produces large, oblong fruit with smooth, light green skin and a rich, tropical flavor unlike anything else you can grow in your backyard.
When ripe, the fruit fills the air with a pleasant aroma and has a smooth, custard-like texture. Its delicious flavor is often described as a blend of banana, mango, and melon, with many comparing it to a rich banana pudding with hints of tropical fruit. Pawpaws are wonderful for fresh eating, smoothies, ice cream, baked goods, and homemade desserts.
Our nursery-grown Pawpaw seedlings are selected for vigor and adaptability. Because they are seedlings, each tree is unique and may vary slightly in fruit size, shape, and flavor.
Pawpaws are native to the eastern United States and thrive in areas with warm summers and cool winters. They prefer rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and benefit from protection from strong winds. Young trees appreciate partial shade during their first one to two years, while mature trees produce the best fruit in full sun.
For successful fruit production, plant at least two Pawpaw seedlings for cross-pollination.
Beyond producing delicious fruit, the Pawpaw is an important native tree that serves as the host plant for the beautiful Zebra Swallowtail butterfly, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly landscapes.
Legend has it that George Washington enjoyed Pawpaws as one of his favorite fruits, making this remarkable tree a delicious piece of American history.
