The Issai Hardy Kiwi is one of the best kiwi varieties for home gardeners because it is self-fertile, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes where space is limited. This unique Japanese variety produces heavy crops of large, sweet, flavorful fruit that can be enjoyed fresh right off the vine.

Unlike fuzzy kiwis found in grocery stores, hardy kiwis have smooth, edible skin, so there’s no peeling required. The bite-sized fruit is packed with delicious flavor and is perfect for fresh eating, fruit salads, smoothies, desserts, and preserves.

Issai is a vigorous yet manageable climbing vine that grows beautifully on trellises, arbors, pergolas, fences, or walls, adding both ornamental beauty and delicious fruit to your landscape.

Although Issai is self-fertile, planting it with a male Hardy Kiwi will increase pollination and produce even larger harvests.

Exceptionally cold hardy, Issai tolerates temperatures down to -25°F and typically begins bearing fruit 3–4 years after planting.

  • Fruit: Large, smooth-skinned, edible skin
  • Flavor: Sweet and delicious
  • Ripens: September through October
  • Bearing Age: 3–4 years
  • Pollination: Self-fertile (heavier crops with a male Hardy Kiwi)
  • Growth Habit: Vigorous climbing vine
  • Cold Hardiness: Hardy to -25°F
  • Best Uses: Trellises, arbors, pergolas, fences, and walls
  • Hardiness Zones: 3–9

If you’re looking for an easy-to-grow kiwi that doesn’t require a pollinator, Issai is an outstanding choice. Its sweet fruit, excellent cold hardiness, and reliable production make it a favorite for home gardens across the country.
