Candy Pecan Tree (Type II)

If you love sweet pecans, the Candy Pecan is one you’ll want in your orchard. This premium variety is prized for its rich, naturally sweet flavor and is a favorite for fresh eating, baking, and making homemade pralines, pecan pies, candied pecans, and other delicious treats.

Candy produces medium-sized pecans with thin shells that crack easily, allowing you to enjoy more whole kernels with less effort. The kernels are well-filled, attractive, and have a high natural sugar content, giving them the exceptional flavor that made this variety famous.

An early-ripening variety, Candy begins producing quality nuts in early fall. The tree is vigorous, highly productive, and is known for producing consistently heavy crops. It also offers good resistance to pecan scab in most growing areas, making it an excellent choice for both home orchards and commercial plantings.

For the best nut production, Candy is a Type II (Protogynous) pecan and should be planted with a Type I pecan variety for proper cross-pollination.

  • Pollination Type: Type II
  • Nut Size: Medium
  • Shell: Paper shell, easy to crack
  • Kernel: Sweet, high-quality, high sugar content
  • Ripens: Early season
  • Tree Habit: Vigorous and highly productive
  • Disease Resistance: Good scab resistance in most areas
  • Hardiness Zones: 6–10
  • Chill Hours: 500–700

Whether you’re planting a backyard orchard or adding to an established pecan grove, Candy is an outstanding choice for growers who want exceptional sweetness, dependable production, and easy-to-shell nuts.

There are two pollination types: Type I and Type II.

For the best nut production, we recommend planting at least one Type I pecan tree and one Type II pecan tree within pollinating distance of each other.

  • Type I: These trees release their pollen first and are ready to receive pollen later.
  • Type II: These trees are ready to receive pollen first and release their pollen later.

Because they bloom at different times, one Type I tree and one Type II tree work together to pollinate each other, resulting in larger and more dependable pecan crops.

Each pecan variety on our website is identified as either Type I or Type II to help you choose compatible trees.
