Desirable Pecan Tree (Type I)
The Desirable Pecan Tree is one of the most popular and widely planted pecan varieties, prized for its exceptional nut quality and dependable production. Developed from the Stuart variety, Desirable produces larger pecans with excellent flavor, making it a favorite for both home growers and commercial orchards.
The attractive paper-shell nuts are large, easy to crack, and filled with high-quality kernels that consistently command premium value. Averaging about 39 nuts per pound, Desirable is known for producing beautiful, flavorful pecans that are perfect for fresh eating, baking, and cooking.
This vigorous tree is highly resistant to scab and performs best in the Southeast. Desirable is a Type I (protandrous) pecan and should be planted with a compatible Type II variety, such as Choctaw, Elliott, or Kiowa, for reliable cross-pollination and maximum nut production.
- Pollination Type: Type I (Protandrous)
- Nut Size: Large
- Average: 39 nuts per pound
- Disease Resistance: Good scab resistance
- Uses: Fresh eating, baking, and cooking
- Zones: 7–9

There are two pollination types: Type I and Type II.
For the best nut production, we recommend planting at least one Type I pecan tree and one Type II pecan tree within pollinating distance of each other.
- Type I: These trees release their pollen first and are ready to receive pollen later.
- Type II: These trees are ready to receive pollen first and release their pollen later.
Because they bloom at different times, one Type I tree and one Type II tree work together to pollinate each other, resulting in larger and more dependable pecan crops.
Each pecan variety on our website is identified as either Type I or Type II to help you choose compatible trees.
