*Choctaw Pecan tree is Type 2.

The Choctaw Pecan variety is the result of a cross between the Mahan and Success varieties. This variety does well in practically all pecan growing areas.

The nut is large and attractive, resembling the Stuart variety in shape. The hull is extra thin. The kernel, which consists of 58% of the total weight of the in shell nut, is very smooth, high in oil content, bright in color, and rich in flavor.

The tree’s upright habit of growth and good foliage makes it a good selection for yard plantings as well as commercial plantings. The Choctaw is protandrous in blooming (late pollen shedding). This variety is easy to shell.

Zones: 6-9

Pecan Tree Pollination:
Pecan trees bloom and shed pollen at separate times, making pecan tree pollination different from fruit trees.

Type I pecan trees and Type II pecan trees.

For adequate cross pollination between pecan trees, it is highly recommended you grow at least one of each type. (1 & 2)

TYPE 1:  Pecan trees that shed pollen first and their pistillate flowers are receptive of pollen later in the season. These varieties are referred to as Protandrous, having a “Type I” flowering habit.

TYPE 2: Pecan trees that have pistillate flowers that are receptive to pollen first and then their catkins shed pollen later in the season. These trees are referred to as Protogynous, having a “Type II” flowering habit.
